Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk
Annabelle lives in small Wolf Hollow, Pennsylvania with her family during World War II. It is a mostly peaceful place but there are some tensions especially with Toby the WWI veteran who wanders the neighboring countryside. Annabelle's family is friends with Toby even though he is a bit strange. When a new girl, Betty, is sent from the city to live with her grandparents; Annabelle's life will never be the same. Betty begins to bully Annabelle but when her vicious attention turns to Toby it becomes deadly. MS Family, Friendship, WWII, PTSD, Bullying
What I liked: I liked the characters. The voice of Annabelle was especially compelling --she was at that age where she is starting to become aware of those around her and that there are not easy answers sometimes. I liked the relationship that Toby had with the family --especially his relationship with Annabelle and her mother. I liked that the bullying was realistic and not easily resolved.
Who should read it: If you like historical fiction or stories about the past, people who want to read stories about bullying and outsiders, those who like moving stories with not so happy endings
