Coming soon to theaters! Have you read the book yet?
Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong Age of Legends 1 Twin sisters, Moira and Ashlyn, are the Keeper and the Seeker in Edgewood protecting the town from the spirits in the Forest of the Dead. After a tragic attack the girls are separated and must fight their way back to each other with the help of an exiled thief and warrior from a disgraced family. Battling mythical monsters the group is tasked with saving themselves and the children of Edgewood. MS 8+ HS Fantasy, Coming of Age, Betrayal, Romance What I liked: I liked the characters especially the sisters. They compliment each other well and both have their strengths and weaknesses. I liked how the story alternated between the two sisters. We would see what was happening and then leave that story at a cliffhanger to switch to the other story. It kept me interested and engaged to see what would happen and how things would come back together. Who should read it: Fantasy readers especially those with an interest in adventure and war stories. It is not for the faint of heart --there is battling monsters and violence. Empire of Night by Kelley Armstrong Age of Legends 1 Book 2 of the Age of Legends series picks up where Sea of Shadows left off. Moira and Ashyn were once the Keeper and Seeker of their village of Edgewood. But Edgewood is now gone and their friends have betrayed them. Now the king has sent them with Prince Tyrus on a mission to find the missing children. But the journey proves more treacherous than imagined with more mythical creatures to battle and betrayal around every corner. The girls are running out of time and people to trust. Can't wait to read the next one and see what happens next. MS 8+/HS Fantasy, Sorcery, Betrayal, War, Romance What I liked: I liked that the story picked right up where it left off and we were able to jump right into the action. I liked that the characters stayed true to themselves. Characters reacted to each other and their situations consistently. I liked the story itself and I am interested to see how things end in the third book. I will definitely be reading it when t comes out next month. If you liked this series, you should try: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard Red Queen 1 Mare is a Red and Reds serve the Silvers. A chance meeting with the crown prince leads to job and freedom from forced conscription in the army fighting a never ending war. When an accident reveals Mare has a supernatural "ability" she is forced into pretending to be a lost Silver princess but this also gives her an opportunity to join the Red Guard -a resistance group fighting for the civil rights of the Reds. But "anyone can betray anyone" and this is a lesson Mare learns well and perhaps too late. MS 8+ HS Family, Friendship, Betrayal, Love, Rebellion, Magic What I liked: I liked this book --it is a good representation of its genre and basic story --underdog heroine is dropped into political intrigue and strife. The characters had some depth although a few of the villains were a bit thin. Who should read it: Fantasy fans that like political intrigue in their stories. Readers who like rebel and underdog stories. If you liked this, you should try: Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne Fantasy story that alternates between Kyra, a thief, and Tristam, a knight. Kyra is an orphan barely scraping by with the help of a local pub owner (Bella) and her nephew Flick who has taught her the thief's trade. Kyra is recruited by the Assassin's guild and things are good for a while --she has more money and is able to help a couple of street girls whom she has kind of adopted. Meanwhile mysterious barbarians with giant cats have been attacking trade routes and farms. When Tristam's friend is killed in a raid by one of these cats he pledges his service to tracking these people down and stopping them. Kyra begins to suspect that all is not quite right with the Assassin's guild and when her path collides with Tristam she must decide which side she wants to be on. MS/HS Fantasy, Family, Betrayal, Trust What I liked: I liked Kyra's character a lot. She was a strong character who had to navigate some tricky moral issues. Tristam's character felt a little less developed even though the story alternates between the two of them. Who should read it: Fantasy fans especially those who like underdog characters, story twists and shapeshifters. If you liked this, you should try: To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han Lara Jean's sister, Margo, is leaving for university in Scotland and Lara Jean is feeling lost without her. Now the Margo is gone it is now Lara Jean's job to take care of her little sister Kitty and their dad and she doesn't feel up to the task. She certainly isn't prepared for her secret love letters that she has written to her crushes over the years to be sent out. It's bad enough that Peter, the cutest boy in school confronts her with his letter but when Lara Jean realizes that her neighbor, friend and sister's ex-boyfriend Josh is going to get one she panics. The only thing to do is convince Peter to be her pretend boyfriend to save face but then things start to get a little crazy when she starts to fall in love with Peter or does she still love Josh? MS 8 HS Coming of Age, Relationships, Sisters I really like this story. I could relate to Lara Jean getting lost while driving and feeling a bit of the odd man out in her family. It was funny and sweet and I liked that the characters felt real --confused and figuring things out and not perfect. Highly recommended for those who like realistic fiction and romance books. The Promise of Amazing by Robin Constantine Wren meets Grayson when she saves him from chocking at a wedding reception. They start dating but when Grayson's past bad behavior catches up with him, she must decide if he is worth fighting for. HS Romance, Family, Friendship Black Cat Crossing by Kay Finch Sabrina moves to Lavender, Texas to help her aunt Rowe run her vacation rental business after she broke her leg. When aunt Rowe's awful cousin Bobby Flowers shows up with a bombshell and then turns up dead; aunt Rowe becomes suspect number one. Between writing her book, meeting with a famous editor, rescuing Hitchcock the bad luck cat and trying to solve a murder; Sabrina has her hands full. If you like cosy mysteries then this would be a good choice for you. With plenty of quirky characters and no gore, this is a fun read for sensitive readers. MS/HS/AD Mystery If you liked this book try some of the great mystery series or stand-alones in the SIS library. So I've had quite a mixed bag of books that I have read recently from YA coming of age to MS fantasy to YA horror. So let's get started! The Things You Kiss Goodbye by Leslie Connor I have read another book by this same author and really enjoyed it so I was excited to read this one as well. I am glad I did. I liked the characters and thought they were realistic in their responses and actions. I also liked that it dealt with relationship violence as few books do and I feel it is important to see these things in a safe space such as books so we can have conversations about this issue that affects many of our students. Bettina is excited when Brady, the star basketball player at school asks her out and they begin dating. Her parents are super strict but her father seems to like Brady and approves of their going out. In fact most of the time Bettina is out anymore is when she is with Brady. But things aren't as great as they seem. After running away from Brady one afternoon; Bettina meets Cowboy who is older and someone her parents would definitely not approve of. His friendship comes to mean a lot to her and things become even more complicated for Bettina. When tragedy strikes Bettina learns what love and family really mean. HS Relationships, Romance, Abuse, Family, Art Mortal Danger by Ann Aguirre So I started reading this without remembering it was a horror book so when things turned scary I was a little surprised. My first clue should have been the cover but I had forgotten the premise of the story and just picked it up out of my TBR pile. All in all it was a good story --usually not a huge horror fan but I liked the main character and the puzzle was interesting enough to keep me reading. I could have done without the "romance" as that felt a little flat to me. Pushed to the brink by bullies, Edie has decided to end it all. When the mysterious and beautiful Kian approaches her with a Faustian deal she accepts with nothing to lose -or so she believes.
